Taking proper care of your artwork during a move or renovation is essential to keeping it safe and in good condition. Whether it’s a painting, photograph, or art print, you want to avoid damage, creasing, or moisture issues.
Here are my top tips on how to store your art safely during changes in your home:
1. Clean and prepare before storing
Gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water or cleaning products, as they can damage paint or paper.
2. Pack artwork carefully
Use acid-free paper or bubble wrap to protect the surface, then place the piece in a sturdy box. Avoid stacking anything heavy on top.
3. Store upright or flat?
Framed works are usually best stored upright to prevent warping or pressure marks. Flat storage can work if you lay the pieces completely flat and protect them well.
4. Avoid moisture and direct sunlight
Always store art in a dry, cool space away from direct sunlight. Humidity and UV rays can quickly damage both colors and materials.
5. Label boxes clearly
Mark each box with what’s inside and add a “Handle with care” note. It makes both the move and unpacking process smoother and safer.
