First Time Buying Art? Here's What You Need to Know

Your personal guide to choosing art for your home – by Hanna Lienhart

Buying art for the first time can feel like a big step – and sometimes a little overwhelming.
What should you look for? How do you know what’s “good” art? And how can you tell if it will actually work in your space?

I’m Hanna Lienhart, and I run Gallery Lienhart. I often meet people who are curious about art but unsure where to begin. That’s why I’ve put together this guide with what I believe every first-time buyer should know – whether you're buying online or in a gallery.

1. You don’t need to be an expert – trust your instincts
Buying art for your home isn’t about rules or trends – it’s about you.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I enjoy looking at this piece?

  • Does it make me feel something?

  • Does it fit my style and space?

There’s no right or wrong answer. Art is deeply personal. Your home, your walls, your taste.

2. What’s the difference between original art and prints?
As a new collector, you’ll come across terms like original painting, limited edition print, fine art print, or giclée. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Original art: A unique, hand-painted piece – there’s only one.

  • Signed prints: Limited edition works, usually numbered and signed by the artist.

  • Reproductions: Mass-produced images, often found as posters or décor.

At Gallery Lienhart, we offer both originals and exclusive prints – and we always let you know which is which.

3. How to choose art that fits your home
The most common thing I hear is: “I don’t know what suits my space.”
My advice: start with the room and the mood you want to create.

  • Which room is the artwork for?

  • Do you want to create calm, energy, or a conversation piece?

  • Which colors do you feel good around?

Large walls often call for larger works. Smaller spaces can shine with small, personal pieces – or be part of a gallery wall.

4. Buying art should feel safe and supportive
When you buy from a gallery, you want to feel confident – that you’re getting what you pay for, and that it will last over time. At Gallery Lienhart, we offer:

  • Clear information about every piece

  • Certificates of authenticity for original works

  • Help with framing

  • Personal support before and after your purchase

  • Open purchase and returns according to distance selling law

5. Ask questions – we’re here for you
You don’t have to know everything. That’s what we’re here for.

Need guidance on style, colors, placement or technique? Just reach out. You can send a photo of your space, describe your interior, or simply say “I like blue and soft shapes.” I’ll help you find something that feels just right.

Warmly,
Hanna Lienhart
